A new consequence-based classification for postpancreatectomy hemorrhage (PPH) offers better predictive value for surgical outcomes than the outdated 2007 criteria.
- Hemorrhages labeled “mild” using the 2007 classification showed significant major morbidity (71.7%) and 5.7% mortality, illustrating its inadequacy.
- The proposed system categorizes PPH into three grades based on clinical consequences, demonstrating strong correlation with increased median hospital stay, major morbidity, and mortality rates.
Surgeons should consider adopting this new classification to enhance decision-making and improve patient counseling regarding PPH risks.
