Minimally Invasive Pancreaticoduodenectomy on the Rise

Minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy (MIPD) approaches are gaining traction, with robotic techniques significantly reducing hospital stays compared to traditional open surgery.

  • MIPD adoption rose from 0% to 34.9% of procedures from 2010 to 2024, primarily driven by a nearly 17-fold increase in robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD).
  • RPD led to a median hospital stay of 6 days, significantly shorter than 7 days for laparoscopic (LPD) and 8 days for open procedures (p<0.001).
  • Conversion rates decreased for both MIPD techniques, with lower overall rates for RPD.

Surgeons should consider RPD’s benefits in reducing recovery time while reflecting on shifting trends in surgical approaches.
