After laparoscopic right colectomy for cancer, an institutional shift to intracorporeal anastomosis was associated with fewer extraction-site hernias and no detectable increase in complications.
- Hernias occurred in 2.5% with intracorporeal versus 13.1% with extracorporeal anastomosis; adjusted odds ratio 0.15.
- Length of stay was shorter; leak, ileus, reintervention, and readmission rates did not differ significantly.
This single-center, retrospective before-and-after study supports considering the technique, but cannot establish that it caused the improvement or exclude changes in care over time.
