Bariatric Surgery Facilitates Renal Transplantation in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease and Obesity

Bariatric surgery (BS) can be a beneficial intervention for patients with obesity and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who require renal transplantation (RT). A review of 31 patients referred for BS found that those who underwent the procedure had increased access to RT and experienced safe and effective outcomes. These findings suggest that the use of BS in specialized units should be considered for patients with obesity and ESRD.
