Study Finds Over Half of ESG Patients Require Opioids in the Perioperative Setting

A retrospective study on endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) evaluated the need for peri- and postoperative opioid therapy. Of the 67 patients included, 58.2% required opioids in the perioperative setting, with a mean dose of 12.3 mg morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs). Furthermore, 17.9% of patients required home opioid prescriptions postoperatively, while more than a third reported no pain. The study emphasizes the importance of individualizing opioid therapy to minimize overprescription and the risk of opioid overuse in ESG patients.
