Predictors of Persistent Pain after Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy for Chronic Pancreatitis

The study aimed to identify the predictors of persistent pain in patients with chronic calcific pancreatitis following extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL). A total of 640 patients were assessed, and 68% experienced pain relief after ESWL while 32% had persistent pain. Predictors of persistent pain included alcohol and tobacco consumption, longer duration of symptoms, dilated main pancreatic duct (MPD), and MPD stricture. The findings suggest that a multidisciplinary approach involving behavioral therapy and surgical options should be considered for patients with these predictors.
