Faculty members in US academic surgery departments were studied over a 10-year period for race, ethnicity, sex, promotion rates, and attrition. Results show underrepresented in medicine (UIM) females faced the lowest promotion rates and highest attrition risk compared to other groups. Non-UIM males had faster promotion times, while non-UIM females had the longest. UIM female faculty had a higher attrition risk. Further research is needed to address the vulnerabilities faced by UIM females in academic surgery departments.
