The study explores the barriers faced by Black medical students and residents in completing surgical residency in Canada. Lack of mentorship, representation, experiences with racism, and systemic racism were identified as key obstacles. Gender intersectionality further exacerbated these challenges. There is a pressing need for diverse mentorship, acknowledgment of systemic racism, and creation of safe spaces to support Black students and trainees in their surgical training.
