High Rate of Emergency Surgery for Sigmoid Diverticulitis in France

This study from 41 French hospitals reveals a 33% rate of emergency surgery for sigmoid diverticulitis, significantly associated with patient age, BMI <18.5 kg/m², and initial diverticulitis episode. The urgent nature of surgery correlated with patient characteristics and disease severity. These findings underscore the importance of identifying risk factors to optimize management and potentially reduce the incidence of emergency surgeries for diverticulitis.
