Systematic review/meta-analysis of 87 studies and 2,731,797 patients shows low cumulative incidence of VTE after metabolic and bariatric surgery. In-hospital VTE rates were 0.15%, increasing to 0.78% at 12 months. Open approach surgeries had higher incidence than laparoscopic. 60% of VTE occurred within first month post-discharge. North American and earlier studies had higher incidence. Extended surveillance and detailed estimates are needed for VTE post-MBS.
