Optimizing Antimicrobial Use in Management of Intra-Abdominal Infections

Effective management of intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) is crucial, with early diagnosis, proper source control, and timely antimicrobial therapy being key. Inappropriate antimicrobial treatment can lead to poor outcomes, including increased mortality. Optimizing antimicrobial prescriptions not only improves treatment effectiveness and patient safety but also helps minimize the risk of opportunistic infections and antimicrobial resistance. A recent consensus conference in Italy has provided evidence-based recommendations for the antimicrobial management of IAIs, aiming to enhance patient care and combat emerging drug-resistant organisms.
