New Scoring System Predicts Survival in Recurrent Hepatocellular Carcinoma

The albumin-bilirubin-alpha-fetoprotein (ALB-AFP) score effectively predicts survival in patients with recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing repeat hepatectomy. By combining albumin-bilirubin grading and serum alpha-fetoprotein levels, researchers stratified patients into three groups, revealing significant differences in 5-year recurrence-free survival: 22.4%, 20.7%, and 0.0%. The ALB-AFP score demonstrated superior predictive value for survival compared to the Japan Integrated Stage and Cancer of the Liver Italian Program scores (0.785 vs. 0.708 and 0.750, respectively). This integrated staging system offers a more accurate prognostic tool, aiding in the identification of patients who will benefit most from repeat hepatectomy.
