Long-term follow-up of patients who underwent primary ventral hernia repair or midline incisional hernia repair with sandwich mesh showed minimal pain, normal activities, and favorable patient-reported outcomes. Most patients had an extra-peritoneal sandwich mesh repair, with a low recurrence rate (9.3%). The study suggests that the open sandwich mesh technique is safe and effective in repairing ventral hernias, highlighting the importance of long-term patient-reported outcomes in evaluating surgical interventions.
