Extended pharmacologic prophylaxis improves survival after colon cancer surgery

Findings from a large database study reveal that extended pharmacologic prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism after colon cancer surgery is associated with enhanced overall and cancer-specific survival. Among 20,102 patients analyzed, those receiving prophylaxis demonstrated significantly improved survival rates, with adjusted hazard ratios of 0.66 and 0.56 for overall and cancer-specific survival, respectively. These results highlight a potential antineoplastic effect of heparin derivatives in the postoperative care of colon cancer patients.
