Bariatric surgery significantly reduces long-term mortality in cirrhosis patients

In a retrospective cohort study of 91,708 patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and cirrhosis, bariatric surgery markedly decreased mortality risks. Those who underwent the procedure showed a 5-year overall mortality of 24.9%, compared to 37.1% in non-surgical counterparts. Significant reductions were also observed in liver-related (3.3% vs. 14%) and non-liver-related mortality (22.3% vs. 26.9%). Specifically, laparoscopic surgeries contributed to lower mortality rates, while open surgeries were linked to increased risks.
