Analysis of immune markers in healthy rectal mucosa indicates that certain cellular profiles, such as high CD8β infiltration, are significant predictors of tumor spread and recurrence in patients after transanal excision for rectal cancer. The study found strong correlations between low activation of CD8+ T cells and increased risk of lateral spread and shorter disease-free survival. These findings suggest that mucosal immune profiling could enhance clinical decision-making in rectal cancer management.
