Surgical residency programs can improve work hour compliance

Lean methodology effectively reduced violations of work-hour restrictions among surgical residents, decreasing the average number of residents logging over 80 hours weekly from 4.4 to 0.8. The study involved multifactorial interventions that enhanced scheduling and workflows. Perceived compliance improved significantly from 72% to 88% over four years, while faculty views on resident preparedness increased from a mean of 2.6 to 3.0. No significant changes were detected in technical skills or clinical judgment.
