Perioperative GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Improve Surgical Outcomes for Diabetic Patients

An active prescription of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) in diabetic patients undergoing surgery is linked to lower risks of 30-day readmission, postoperative wound dehiscence, and hematoma, according to a recent study. Out of 74,425 surgical procedures analyzed, the GLP-1 RA group demonstrated significant reductions compared to non-users. No differences were observed in infection or bleeding rates, suggesting these medications could enhance recovery outcomes in surgical patients with diabetes.
