Hemihepatectomy may preserve better nutritional status than pancreatoduodenectomy

A comparative analysis of surgical approaches for extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma revealed that hemihepatectomy (HH) had fewer severe complications, lower pancreatic fistula rates, and shorter hospital stays than pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). However, HH showed a higher perioperative mortality rate among right hemihepatectomy patients. At one year post-surgery, patients undergoing HH maintained better skeletal muscle area, body fat, and hemoglobin levels. These findings highlight the need to weigh the risks and benefits of surgical options.
