Patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and cirrhosis experience significantly lower long-term mortality rates after bariatric surgery, particularly with laparoscopic techniques. A study in California analyzed data from 91,708 patients, revealing that those who underwent bariatric surgery had a 5-year overall mortality rate of 24.9%, compared to 37.1% for non-surgical patients. Laparoscopic procedures were notably effective, associated with reduced overall mortality, while open surgeries posed an increased risk.
