Gastrointestinal motility agents improve recovery after colorectal surgery

Gastrointestinal motility agents significantly enhance recovery in patients after elective colorectal surgery, according to a systematic analysis of seven randomized controlled trials involving 849 individuals. Patients experienced accelerated gastrointestinal recovery by 1.01 days and reduced time to first bowel movement by 1.07 days. Importantly, safety outcomes, including rates of complications such as anastomotic leaks and readmissions, showed no significant differences. The findings suggest that incorporating these agents into enhanced recovery protocols could be beneficial.
