What Drives Good Outcomes in Older Patients with Colorectal Cancer Surgery?

Surgeon-led geriatric service and good quality surgery are key in achieving good outcomes in older colorectal cancer surgery patients. A 10-year review of 233 patients aged ≥75 years or frail showed low 30-day mortality (1.7%) and complications (12.0%), with a median length of stay of 7.0 days. Cumulative sum analysis demonstrated sustained improvement in outcomes, despite transient inconsistencies during the midimplementation phase. Overcoming the learning curve led to improved outcomes, emphasizing the importance of quality surgery and a specialized geriatric service.
