Same-day discharge (SDD) after bariatric operation has increased from 2.4% in 2016 to 7.4% in 2021. The study found that black/African American race, history of myocardial infarction, renal insufficiency, DVT, and smoking were preoperative factors associated with increased complications for SDD. SDD for RYGB had a 72% increased risk of postoperative complications compared with SG. While major complications were lower in the SDD cohort, there was a significant increase in deaths, cardiac arrest, and dehydration requiring treatment compared with admission.
