Analysis of 86 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and portal vein tumor thrombosis showed no significant difference in overall survival and recurrence-free survival between laparoscopic and open liver resections. The only predictors of recurrence-free survival were specific pathological factors, not the type of surgery. Laparoscopic resection for HCC with PVTT provides comparable short- and long-term outcomes to open resection.
