Identifying Genetic and Biologic Risk Factors for Hernia Formation

Genetic and biologic markers associated with hernia formation were investigated, with 65 studies selected from a total of 5946. Notable findings include 92 susceptible loci across 66 genes in inguinal hernias, elevated MMP-2 levels in direct versus indirect inguinal hernias, unique gene-expression profiles in incisional hernias, and genetic risk loci in hiatal hernias. Collagen ratios were consistently lower in all hernia types. Further research is needed to understand genetic and biological complexities for personalized patient care.
