Reduced Risk of Esophageal Adenocarcinoma in Patients with Obesity After Bariatric Surgery

Meta-analysis of 14 studies demonstrates a significantly reduced risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma in patients with obesity undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery, with an overall incidence reduction (OR=0.69) and particularly lower risk in European populations (OR: 0.60) and studies with larger sample sizes (OR: 0.59). Articles published before and in 2020, as well as those with follow-up under 5 years, also show a reduced risk, suggesting bariatric surgery may lower the likelihood of esophageal cancer development.
