Efficacy of Fibrin Sealants in Thyroidectomy

Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of fibrin sealants (FS) in thyroid surgery. The analysis included 652 patients who underwent thyroidectomy with FS and compared them with conventionally treated patients. The primary outcomes were total wound drainage, length of hospitalization, and operative time. FS significantly reduced total drainage volume (mean deviation: -29.75), length of hospitalization (mean deviation: -0.84), and surgery duration (mean deviation: -7.60). Although FS did not significantly impact hypoparathyroidism risk or seroma formation, it showed a reduced need for invasive seroma treatment.
