Benefits of Same-Day Ileostomy Closure Discharge

A retrospective study compared same-day discharge (SDD) ileostomy closure with traditional enhanced recovery pathways (ERP) to assess patient outcomes. Among 375 patients, the 30-day complication rate was significantly lower in the SDD group (14.8%) compared to the standard ERP group (25.7%), driven by a reduced incidence of ileus. Readmission and reoperation rates were similar between the groups. These findings suggest that SDD for ileostomy closure is a safe and effective procedure, potentially setting a new standard of care. Further research is needed to validate these results.
