Providers in veterans affairs hospitals utilize elements of shared decision-making when caring for critically ill surgical patients in the ICU. Through qualitative interviews, key components of shared decision-making were identified, along with barriers and facilitators to its implementation. These findings offer valuable insights for interventions aiming to enhance shared decision-making in the ICU and other healthcare settings, ultimately improving communication and decision-making processes for surgical patients.
