In a study involving 262 Crohn’s disease patients, ileal and colonic mucosa-associated microbiota deviations were identified as predictors of disease recurrence after surgical remission. Of 97 patients in remission, those who later developed endoscopic recurrence exhibited reduced microbial diversity and specific microbial shifts, notably a depletion of genus Anaerostipes and increased gammoproteobacterial genera. The gut microbiome’s predictive ability outperformed traditional clinical features, indicating that targeted microbial modulation could potentially prevent postoperative recurrence.
• Why it matters: Understanding microbiota helps prevent Crohn’s disease recurrence post-surgery.
