Prophylactic negative pressure wound therapy may reduce infections.

A multicenter randomized trial aims to determine if prophylactic negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) decreases postoperative wound complications in midline laparotomy patients. The trial will compare standard dressings with NPWT devices, involving 2013 patients over 36 months. By addressing the prevalence of surgical site infections and their associated healthcare costs, the study seeks to provide conclusive data on effective management strategies for laparotomy wounds, establishing a basis for consensus in clinical practices.
