Postoperative hyperlipasemia predicts risk of pancreatic fistula

A study of 471 patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy revealed that postoperative hyperlipasemia and hyperamylasemia on the first day post-surgery are significant independent risk factors for developing postoperative pancreatic fistula. In multivariate analysis, hyperlipasemia was identified as a notable predictor of this complication, suggesting that its absence may assist in identifying low-risk patients. Integrating serum lipase and amylase into clinical practice could improve patient management and facilitate earlier discharges.
