In a study of 81,955 patients undergoing surgery for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), 26.6% were identified with psychiatric disorders (PDs). These patients faced significantly higher risks of postoperative ileus, longer hospital stays, and increased costs. Furthermore, they had higher odds of non-home discharge and 30-day readmissions. The prevalence of PDs among IBD patients rose from 24.3% to 28.5% during the study period, indicating an urgent need for preoperative psychiatric care to improve surgical outcomes.
