Enhanced recovery protocol lowers postoperative complications in liver surgery

The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol significantly reduced overall postoperative complications in liver cancer patients undergoing hepatectomy. Analysis of twelve studies with 1,892 participants revealed lower odds ratios for complications, including Clavien-Dindo grade 1-2 (OR=0.39) and pneumonia (OR=0.34). Additional benefits included decreased intraoperative blood loss and duration of abdominal drain. Importantly, ERAS did not elevate rates of blood transfusions, hospital readmissions, or mortality, indicating its safety and efficacy in this patient population.
