Opioid disposal rates significantly improved through EMR interventions

Innovative electronic medical record (EMR) interventions effectively increased opioid disposal rates after surgery. Following implementation, disposal rates surged from 30% to 83% among patients with excess opioids. Additionally, 47% of patients engaged in post-operative discussions with providers, enhancing disposal likelihood to 92% compared to 70% for those without such discussions. These findings highlight the potential for easily integrated strategies to promote safer opioid disposal and mitigate associated risks of misuse and dependency.
