Surgical technique influences risk of gastroesophageal reflux after surgery

Surgical techniques during laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy significantly affect the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Analyzing 7,435 patients, the study found that using a narrower bougie size and resecting further from the pylorus increased the likelihood of requiring proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) post-surgery. Advanced age and female sex were identified as independent risk factors for GERD symptoms, while factors like initial BMI and total weight loss did not show significant correlations.
