Combined assessment of frailty and hypoalbuminemia improves surgical risk prediction

A cohort study of 9.8 million surgical patients revealed that combining the modified frailty index 5 (mfi-5) with hypoalbuminemia significantly enhances predictive accuracy for surgical outcomes. The analysis indicated that the combined assessment outperformed individual predictors in identifying risks for 30-day mortality, complications, and hospital stays. Additionally, a weak negative correlation was noted between mfi scores and serum albumin levels, suggesting interlinked pathways in predicting surgical risk.
