Fluorescent cholangiography enhances visualization during acute cholecystitis surgery

A prospective study involving 81 patients demonstrated the efficacy of near-infrared fluorescent cholangiography (NIRF-C) in emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis. The cystic duct was successfully identified in 56.8% and 95.1% of patients before and after calot’s dissection, respectively. Significant differences in visualization rates of biliary structures were observed between non-gangrenous and more severe cases. These findings suggest that NIRF-C improves intraoperative visualization of the extrahepatic biliary tract during cholecystectomy.
