Preserving the inferior mesenteric artery improves defecatory function

A study found that preserving the inferior mesenteric artery during laparoscopic colorectal resection for diverticular disease significantly reduced the incidence and severity of defecatory disorders. With 219 patients evaluated, those who had the artery preserved reported improved quality of life and stable defecatory function over time, even six years post-surgery. These findings suggest that arterial preservation minimizes colonic denervation, enhancing patient outcomes in terms of daily activities and overall well-being.
