Percutaneous catheter drainage is a safe alternative for abscess management

In a study involving 90 patients with periappendiceal abscesses, ultrasound-guided percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) combined with antibiotics demonstrated significant advantages over emergency laparoscopic surgery (ELS). The PCD approach resulted in shorter operative times, fewer postoperative complications, and reduced hospital stays. These results highlight PCD’s efficacy as a viable alternative to surgical intervention, yielding benefits that can alleviate patient discomfort and optimize healthcare resources, although further multicenter research is necessary for broader validation.
