Predictive model enhances decision-making in gallbladder cancer surgeries

A study involving 788 gallbladder cancer patients identified key predictors of futile up-front surgery, defining futile cases as those resulting in early recurrence or death post-operation. Among patients, 13.6% experienced futile outcomes, with a stark median survival of 6.8 months versus 57.4 months for non-futile cases. Major risk factors included advanced tumor stage, lymph node involvement, and multivisceral resection. A robust predictive model was developed, optimizing patient selection to potentially reduce unnecessary surgeries.
