A novel surface microdialysis probe demonstrated safety and feasibility for monitoring liver metabolism after resection in 17 patients. Complications were minimal and consistent with Clavien-Dindo classification. Key metabolites, including glucose, lactate, and pyruvate, were analyzed, revealing significantly higher lactate in liver samples compared to plasma, particularly in ischemic areas. Notably, the lactate/pyruvate ratio correlated with subsequent increases in alanine aminotransferase, indicating potential for in vivo tumor metabolism assessment and early risk detection.
