Neoadjuvant treatment leads to promising watch and wait outcomes in rectal cancer

A nationwide study reveals that 15% of patients with non-metastasized rectal cancer successfully utilized a watch and wait strategy after neoadjuvant treatment. Among those treated with chemoradiotherapy, 21% achieved favorable results, compared to just 7% for short-course radiotherapy. Organ preservation rates improved to 17% when local excisions were included. Data indicate better baseline performance and lower tumor stages in patients opting for watch and wait, with three-year survival rates of 81% for short-course and 95% for chemoradiotherapy groups.
