A recent analysis of 22,312 patients shows that same-day (0.9%) and short-stay (8.2%) stoma closure protocols significantly reduce overall morbidity compared to traditional inpatient stays (90.9%)—11.8%. Both expedited discharge methods demonstrate comparable safety outcomes, with the inpatient group experiencing higher reoperation rates. Despite evidence supporting these approaches, their adoption remains limited, highlighting potential for improved outpatient protocols guided by specific risk factors.
