Laparoscopic hernia repair improves recovery in elderly patients

In a randomized trial involving 120 elderly patients, laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair showed significant benefits over traditional open surgery. Recovery times were notably shorter, with patients returning to normal activities within 7.5 days compared to 10.6 days for the open group (p<0.001). Postoperative pain scores were lower for laparoscopic procedures at both one day and one month post-surgery. The complication rates remained similar, indicating that laparoscopic techniques are a safe and efficient option for older adults.
