Cholecystectomy shows better outcomes than percutaneous cholecystostomy

A systematic review and meta-analysis examined treatment outcomes for acute cholecystitis, revealing that laparoscopic cholecystectomy (CC) significantly reduces mortality (OR=0.26) and readmission rates (OR=0.37) compared to percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC). While CC showed superior results, PC remains a viable option for high-risk patients. Studies comparing PC followed by CC to CC alone yielded mixed conclusions, indicating no significant advantage for the combined approach. Further research is necessary to optimize treatment strategies for these patients.
