Early ileocolic resection significantly lowers the need for further surgeries in Crohn’s disease.
- In patients undergoing early ileocolic resection, only 2.43% required additional surgery within 5 years, compared to 20.58% in those receiving medical therapy.
- Long-term biologic use was dramatically lower in the surgery group (18.38%) versus the medical treatment group (72.91%).
Considering early surgery can provide a safe pathway to remission, it’s crucial for surgeons to assess the timing of surgical intervention in localized ileocolic cases.
- These findings suggest that surgical intervention may enhance quality of life by achieving stable disease control sooner.
