Colectomy Improves Quality of Life and Lowers Recurrence in Diverticulitis

Patients with recurrent sigmoid diverticulitis opting for colectomy reported significantly better quality of life after one year compared to those choosing observation, alongside a lower 1-year recurrence rate.

• Colectomy was linked to a 1.73-point improvement in quality of life scores (95% CI: 1.02-2.46) compared to observation.
• Recurrence rates were 17% in the colectomy group versus 45% in the observation group; the adjusted odds of recurrence were significantly lower for those who underwent colectomy (aOR 0.16; 95% CI: 0.05-0.48).

These findings suggest that surgical intervention may provide better long-term outcomes for select patients.
