Single vs. Double Stapled Anastomosis in Colorectal Surgery

Single-stapled anastomosis may be a viable alternative to double-stapled techniques after anterior rectal resection, showing no increased risk of complications despite a trend toward lower anastomotic leaks.

  • Single-stapled anastomosis exhibited a risk ratio of 0.77 for anastomotic leakage, although this was not statistically significant (95% CI, 0.46-1.31).
  • No significant differences were found in overall postoperative complications, anastomotic stricture, or low anterior resection syndrome between the two techniques.

Consider discussing the single-stapled approach with patients, as it could simplify the surgical technique without compromising safety.
