Laparoscopic Surgery is Noninferior to Open Surgery for Stage IV Colon Cancer

Laparoscopic surgery offers noninferior progression-free survival compared to open surgery for noncurable stage IV colon cancer patients, making it a viable option.

  • Three-year progression-free survival rates were 5.3% for open surgery and 3.0% for laparoscopic, with a hazard ratio of 1.028 (p=0.02 for noninferiority).
  • Overall survival at three years was 31.5% for open and 28.5% for laparoscopic surgery.

This supports laparoscopic resection as an acceptable surgical approach, possibly allowing for less invasive treatment in this patient population.
